Pancake Martin
Some call him Pancake Martin. An affectionate nickname Martin Vágoy happily responds to. Because for the 64-year-old from Vatnsoyrar, Faroe Islands, pancakes are a well-honed craft, a matter of professional pride. “It’s fun and it’s lovely to bake pancakes, but the best bit is seeing how happy the guests are about getting freshly made pancakes for breakfast,” Martin smiles.
Since Martin on May 12th 2016 signed on with Norröna for the first time, he has been part of the kitchen team at Skansagarður. His tasks include carving meats for the buffet in the evening, as well as frying eggs and baking up to 1,200 pancakes for breakfast. This is only possible because Martin makes them using two pans frying five on each pan at the time.
Sunday September 25th 2022 was a special day for Martin. It was the day he baked pancake number 1 million since he joined the team on board. The pancake was precisely the right colour, it looked and tasted perfect, but with Martin’s experience they usually do, though roundness can sometimes be a challenge. “If the weather is a little rough, the pancakes don’t exactly come out the perfect shape every time, but they always taste just as delicious,” Martin emphasises.
